It's now about 3 months since AT&T apparently started blocking data on iPhone GoPhone plans. Are there any workarounds? Here's my situation:
I have a 3G iPhone bought from AT&T on a contract that I canceled after one month (so paid the cancellation fee, but kept the handset). It's jailbroken and unlocked on OS 3.0, and I use it without incident on a non-iPhone contract on the O2 network in the UK (where I live). I've had an AT&T wireless number for about 10 years, originally in a TDMA contract, but was able to gett AT&T to agree to port it to a GoPhone PAYG plan a few years ago when they decommisioned their TDMA network and switched to GSM. For years I've just loaded $100 per 12 months to keep my account active, and then used it when I was in the States. Since I got the iPhone in late 2008, I was able to add the $19.99 30-day 100 MB data bolt-on to use when I was in the States for data, which is great because it's more than enough for a 1-week vacation. The last time I was in the US was April 2009 and the 100 MB bolt-on worked great (I was also on OS 2.2). When I arrived for my latest trip this weekend (Sep-09), I had already added the 100 MB data bolt-on before I left London, but was frustrated when I landed in Phoenix and had no data when I put the AT&T SIM in the iPhone ("could not activate cellular data network", or whatever). I found it even weirder that I could not access the APN settings in Settings -> General -> Network (maybe an AT&T SIM blocks that because I never tried to access it previously with that SIM in the phone, but when my O2 SIM is in the phone I can definitely manually adjust the APN, MMS and Visual Voicemail settings).
Anyway, I found this site, installed the little config file, and voila, data worked fine in 3G...for about 24 hours. Today, though, I had either no coverage or maybe very spotty coverage, but completely unreliable, especially with full bars. Then, after reading this forum, I experimented by turing off the 3G radio, and amazingly I've got data again, albeit in Edge (not a huge problem, and obviously a big plus if I want to conserve my battery). It's only been about three hours since I did this and I still have data, but I'm wondering if it is possible to still use data on a PAYG AT&T GoPhone plan, albeit just not 3G?
Does anyone else have experience getting data (consistently) on an iPhone 3G with a GoPhone PAYG (not Pick Your Plan) data bundle?
Thanks
