Guys,

The deal with the iPad MicroSIM not working in an iPhone is a simple one.

The APN used for all AT&T iPad MicroSIM's is "broadband" The AT&T iPhone MicroSIM's are provisioned to use something else.  There is nothing different about the SIMS physically, they are the same device.

If you buy an iPhone 4 and don't activate in store (pay full price) but instead take it home, remove the SIM, and activate the SIM in an iPad 3G your MicroSIM will be activated (with no activation charge, no voice/text plan and no contract) with the data plan of choice ($15/$25).  The problem here is that when you do this, and put the MicroSIM back in the iPhone 4 it will appear activated (with 3G coverage) but you will get the error "Could not activate cellular data network".  This is due to the MicroSIM activation method (in iPad 3G) and means that you now must have a device with an APN setting of "broadband" or a device capable of changing to this, which the iPhone 4 isn't by default.

So, if somebody can figure out how to change the APN setting in a new iPhone 4 to "broadband" you could have a phone that costs $28 a month for almost unlimited calls/text/data using the $25 iPad data tariff and a Skype account with $3 per month unlimited.

Does anybody know how to change the new iPhone 4 APN???  I have tried with the tool and it will not change it.

Yep. Just did it. (iPad 3G w/AT&T SIM, transferred into iPhone 4 no-contract/unlocked)

  • Remove existing "unlockit" profile if it exists
  • Visit unlockit.co.nz (I used WiFi)
  • Don't select a carrier profile, just use "broadband" as the APN.
  • Create the profile and install it.
  • Turn off WiFi
  • Go to an uncached web page or check your email etc.
