They have MMS working on jailbroken 2G Iphones.

with cydia search for ActivateMMS2G and then you will have to put your Carriers MMS Settings in

So where to you find the carrier setting for vodafone NZ?
I'm guessing if I ring up vodafone they are gonna tell me to get lost and buy a legit iphone.

As Vodafone New Zealand is an Official Carrier it you just plug your iPhone in with your Vodafone New Zealand Card it will ask you to upgrade to the latest Carrier File which has all the settings into it
